“Can you tell us what happened to your wife?” asked the first officer. Malcolm immediately flashed back to the pictures that were sent to him of Cameron and some other man in his bed. He was becoming angry just thinking about it. He thought about how he had called and texted her and how she never answered. He began to think that every single time he called and she didn’t answer was because she was with that man from the pictures. He thought about how quickly he made it home and how he met Cameron in the curve down the street from their house. He internally reminisced about how he turned around and chased her, driving at least ninety miles per hour down the road. He replayed the scene of him ramming his car into the back of her car, causing her to run off of the road and flip at least two times that he knew of, which made him more and more nervous as he began to speak. “All I know is I received a call from someone saying that she was in an accident,” said Malcolm. The second officer asked Malcolm, “Where were you when you got the…”

Malcolm answered before the officer could finish his question, “At work, I was at work and I got here as soon as I could. It took me two hours to get here because I wasn’t too far away.”

“Well, you didn’t even allow me to finish my question but OK Mr. Price. We will be following up with your boss to confirm your route,” the officer said while smirking.

“I… I was actually heading home to surprise my wife and I told my boss I had a family emergency. I get lonely out there on the highway and I was missing my family. I don’t want to get fired so I said I had an emergency but I was going right back to work,” Malcolm said.

“My my my, didn’t that story change up very quickly,” said the same officer, not believing a word that Malcolm was saying.

“I just need to get to my wife. I think she ran off the road trying to kill herself,” Malcolm said while crying hysterically. Both officers were looking at him in disbelief now. They couldn’t charge him off of suspicions so they had no choice but to let him go, however, they advised the medical staff of their suspicions and requested that he be supervised when visiting with his wife.

Cameron’s parents didn’t know the full story yet, but they knew something was terribly wrong from the moment they received the phone call to come to the hospital right away. When Malcolm passed out after seeing the officers, they knew that he had done something to hurt their baby girl. They weren’t allowed in the room while Malcolm was being questioned and Cameron’s dad was about to lose his mind. He was feeling guilty about even introducing his baby girl to that bastard. One of his coworkers he considered to be a friend had told him about Malcolm and he was sold from the very beginning. He never did his own research; he just took the word of his friend.

It was hard for Cameron’s mom to calm her husband down because she was a nervous wreck herself. She slipped away from him and went to the bathroom to make a call that needed to be made. She knew that Keith would want to know about Cameron. Cameron would want him to know and she knew how to get the message to him. She had to make it quick so that she could be by her husband’s side.

Malcolm was in the back with the officers for about fifteen minutes. Those fifteen minutes seemed like a whole hour. The officers walked out and headed towards the elevator and Malcolm walked out about two minutes later. “WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY DAUGHTER, YOU ASSHOLE?” Cameron’s dad screamed while charging toward Malcolm. Her mom tried her best to hold him back but she was no match to the power he had. Cameron’s mom was thankful the officers hadn’t gotten on the elevators and heard all of the commotion. They rushed back and grabbed Cameron’s dad just as he put his hands around Malcolm’s neck. After everything calmed down and the officers separated Malcolm from his father-in-law’s strong grip, they heard a code blue called over the intercom. Everyone panicked and Malcolm passed out again, assuming the code had been called for Cameron.

  Three Days Later

  Chapter 1

Cameron woke up, but couldn’t figure out where she was. It felt like she had been dreaming for days. Every time she tried to wake up, she just couldn’t. She cried and screamed out loud but nothing ever left her lips. She had been in a coma for three days after she was run off the road and almost killed by her husband. When she finally opened her eyes, she heard beeping noises and panicked, but it didn’t last long because it was a struggle to keep her eyes open.

After stirring for just a few moments, she quickly dozed back off. When the room door opened a little while later, Cameron opened her eyes again and tried to sit up. “Oh my! Mrs. Price, you’re awake!! Don’t try to move just yet sweetie. Doctor..doctor, she’s awake,” a lady said, after pressing a button that was on the right side of the bed. Within seconds, Cameron heard more people coming into the room. They all seemed to be in a rush. Her head was spinning and pounding and she couldn’t think straight or process much of anything. She tried to talk, but was instructed not to do so at the time. “Just relax. You’re going to be just fine, but you have to stay as calm as possible,” they kept saying to her, trying their best to provide comfort.

It was then that she noticed that she was restrained and had all kinds of tubes hooked up to her. The machines went crazy and started making all kinds of noises because she started to panic. “Please relax Mrs. Price. Blink when you feel me touch you,” the doctor said. He touched her feet, legs, arms, and hands; she blinked when he touched every part. “This is awesome. I don’t want to upset you anymore than you already are, but you’re in the hospital and you’ve been in a coma for the past three days because you were involved in an accident. We are about to take you down for some additional testing to compare to our previous results. A few days ago, we almost lost you and testing showed signs of paralysis, but thank God you are able to feel my touch right now. I know it’s hard and you probably have tons of questions, but try not to move or talk for the time being. After these next tests are complete, we should be able to get some of these awful tubes out of you. I also regret to inform you that your baby didn’t make it, but I want you to keep resting and we will get you down shortly to run the test,” the doctor said and walked off.

Tears began to roll freely down Cameron’s cheeks. While the doctor was talking, she was trying to remember exactly what had happened. She was hearing him, but it really wasn’t making any sense to her. How did I get into the hospital and why have I been in a coma for three days? What in the hell happened? Cameron was thinking. When the doctor said that she lost her baby, some things started coming back to her. Malcolm. Malcolm had chased her and run her car off the road. She remembered that Keith had called her and told her that Charlotte was giving Phebe information. Why would my sister do this to me? Where is Malcolm now? Where is Keith? Is Malcolm somewhere waiting to kill me? She thought to herself. She had no idea that she hadn’t been allowed to have visitors while she had been in the hospital due to an ongoing investigation. Why do they have me tied down like I’m some animal? What the hell is going on? She thought.

“Her husband informed us that she is suicidal so you guys keep a close eye on her. He seems to think she ran her car off the road in hopes of killing herself. The officers want to talk to her, but we will try to hold them off until she regains more strength later on or in the morning. She still needs tons of rest. We can’t confirm the husband’s story because she has been out of it, but we still have to keep a close eye on her just for standard protocol,” Cameron heard the doctor telling a nurse before he walked out of the door. THAT MOTHERFUCKER!! HE TOLD THEM I TRIED TO KILL MYSELF WHEN HE RAN ME OFF THE ROAD!! Cameron screamed in her head. The nurse noticed that Cameron was becoming upset so she hit a button and gave her a dose of medicine and Cameron drifted back off to sleep within minutes.

When Cameron woke up again, she was able to move a little. She didn’t try to sit up because she didn’t want to be disappointed. Being tied down was as draining as whatever injuries she had. It seemed like she was in a different room than before, but she really couldn’t tell. “Hey baby, you’re finally up.” She panicked after h
earing a voice and recognizing it was Malcolm. She tried to scream but her voice was weak and just trying hurt her throat. “Relax, I’m not going hurt you….as long as you keep your mouth shut,” Malcolm said through gritted teeth with a sinister smile on his face, as he made his way to her bedside. “You done had a nigga in my house, in my bed, having me looking like a damn fool. I should kill yo ass right now,” he said, as he snatched the pillow from under her head and briefly covered her face. The monitors began to beep louder and a nurse ran into the room. “Are you OK, Mrs. Price,” she asked while staring at Malcolm.

“She’s just waking up. I was trying to fluff her pillow. Do you want some water sweetheart?” Malcolm asked in a nice voice.

“Are you OK?” The nurse asked again this time looking directly at Cameron and ignoring Malcolm. Cameron shook her head yes, but was pleading with her eyes for the nurse to notice that she was not OK. “I might have to ask you to step outside, sir. It seems to me that you’re upsetting my patient,” the nurse said to Malcolm. “I’m her husband, I have the right to be in here,” Malcolm told the nurse.

“I don’t care who you are, sir. I have the duty of making sure that my patient is in the best care possible and it seems that you’re upsetting her, so if she doesn’t get back to the calm state she was in earlier, you WILL leave.” The nurse told Malcolm with finality.

“I’m sorry ma’am, I won’t be a problem,” Malcolm said as nice as he could while smiling at the nurse.

“I will be back shortly. If you need ANYTHING, anything at all, just hit the button Mrs. Price,” the nurse said to Cameron, as she made sure the call button was within reach before rolling her eyes at Malcolm and walking out.

Just as Malcolm was threatening Cameron again, two officers walked in. They were the same two officers that had been questioning Malcolm and keeping a close eye on him. Malcolm moved from Cameron’s bedside and went and sat down. “Mrs. Price, we’re glad to see you’re doing much better. I know this has been a difficult time for you and we are so sorry for your loss, but we have a few questions that we need to ask you, one of the officers said.”

“What what kinda loss are y’all talking about?” Malcolm stood up and asked while stuttering.

“Mr. Price, the doctor said he tried to speak with you several times, but you were never in the right state of mind. Your wife lost the baby during the ‘accident’,” the other officer said. Malcolm broke down crying and ran towards the bed and threw his arms around Cameron yelling and screaming. Cameron flinched and the officers noticed. Malcolm was crying so loud that two nurses and the doctor rushed into the room. The nurse who had threatened to put it him out just looked at him with pure disgust. Cameron sat up and tried to push Malcom off of her, but he held on tighter screaming how sorry he was. “What exactly are you sorry for?” one of the officers asked.

“I’m sorry she is having to go through all of this and there’s nothing I can do to fix it,” Malcolm said through tears.

“Maybe you should step outside with me while my partner asks your wife some questions,” one officer said.

“I’m not leaving my wife alone, she needs me,” Malcolm said while becoming angry.

“He straightened up pretty quick,” one of the nurses mumbled sarcastically.

“Mrs. Price, do you remember what happened to you that caused you to be in a coma for three days?” one officer asked. She looked at Malcolm and trembled with fear before answering. The officers, doctor, and nurses all noticed and shifted. “I was trying to dodge something in the road and lost control of my car,” Cameron said quietly, after she sighed and closed her eyes.

The other officer asked, “Are you sure no one was chasing you? We got an anonymous call about someone chasing you, but with no witnesses or your word we don’t have any leads. Did someone run you off the road? Your car was hit from behind,” the officer told her.

“I really don’t remember,” Cameron replied with her eyes still shut tight.

“Y’all heard my wife and y’all are upsetting her so that’s enough,” Malcolm said. The officers really didn’t want to leave, but they didn’t have much of a choice since Cameron wasn’t cooperating. It was clear that she was lying and in fear for her life, but their hands were tied.

“Ma’am, here’s our card. If you can think of anything to help us out, anything at all, please do not hesitate to call. It doesn’t matter the time. Day or night. We don’t believe you tried to kill yourself like someone said,” the officer said while looking at Malcolm. He wanted to lock Malcolm up right then and there, but he couldn’t.

Cameron didn’t know that they had already questioned Malcolm, but they waited to mention the miscarriage in front of him to see how he would react. Cameron rubbed her stomach and told the officers thanks and she would be in touch if she remembered anything. As everyone was leaving, except Malcolm; Toya, Sonya, and Shay walked in. They all had their hands full with balloons, flowers, and candy. They all spoke and asked her how she was doing. “I’m here,” she replied.

“We’ve been trying to come see you forever, but they wouldn’t let us up here until today,” Toya said.

“I lost the baby,” Cameron said sadly while trying to get comfortable. Malcolm broke down crying again. Each of the girls turned and looked at him and he ran out of the room crying. “Thank God his ass finally left,” Cameron said. “I wish y’all could see how he’s been acting up here. He was rude to the officers, nurses, doctors, and even threatened to finish what he started. The nigga even put a pillow over my face. Thank God the nurse walked in or he just might have killed me. He didn’t know I was pregnant so he lost it when he heard them say I lost the baby,” Cameron said.

“Did you tell the cops what happened?” Sonya asked.

“I couldn’t. If y’all would have heard how he was talking and saw the looks he was giving me right in front of the cops, y’all would understand,” Cameron said while trying to fight back tears.

“That nigga is crazy as a road lizard,” Toya said while shaking her head. “Keith called me. He said someone called his dad and told him what happened. He’s been worried sick. He even came up here a few times, he said. Thank God he didn’t run into Malcolm’s crazy ass,” Toya continued.

“Lord lord lord! So what are you gonna do Cam?” Shay asked.

“I really don’t know what choice I have. You see he almost killed me. I believe he will finish the job at any moment now,” Cameron said, failing to fight back tears.

“Damn, this is crazy. I just don’t believe in living in dysfunction. No peace in your own home has got to be the worst,” Toya said while still shaking her head.

“This really is some crazy shit Cam. I hate you’re having to go through all of this,” Sonya said. They all talked for about another hour. When Malcolm walked back into the room, everyone froze. None of them wanted to be around him, but they didn’t want to be rude either. The room was quiet until Malcolm spoke up. “I saw your brother’s friend, baby. You remember the one that you cooked breakfast for? He tried to act like he didn’t remember me, but I reminded him. He said his girlfriend had a wreck too and he’s waiting until some of her visitors leave so he can see her.” Malcolm said. Shay dropped her purse, Sonya’s mouth was wide open, and Toya said, “I think we better get going.” Cameron was just looking crazy and playing dumb. “Keith. His name was Keith. I couldn’t even think of it when I saw him, but I remember now. Maybe I will run into him again,” Malcolm said.

“Get well soon, girl. We will be checking on you,” the girls said and left. No one wanted to say the wrong thing in front of Malcolm, so they just left. They met Cameron’s parents in the hallway on the way out. They had recently finished speaking with the officers and were pissed off at Malcolm. They all talked for about ten minutes until Cameron’s parents were ready to go in and visit with her. “Let us know if you all need help with anything Mr. and Mrs. Miller.” Toya said to them before they walked into Cameron’s room. It would be hard for her dad not to kill Malco
lm on sight. If the police wouldn’t have intervened earlier, he would have killed him with his bare hands. He was beginning to hate himself more and more as the days passed for not handling the situation he was faced with better than he did.

  Chapter 2

Cameron was released from the hospital three days later. She couldn’t believe the path that her life had taken. After almost an entire week in the hospital, Cameron was relieved to be at her parent’s house. Malcolm wanted her at home, but he didn’t stand a chance when Cameron broke down crying at the hospital in front of her parents saying that she wanted to stay with them until she got better. Malcolm didn’t put up a fight when Cameron’s dad stepped to him. They almost came to blows again, but Malcolm backed down and walked away.

Cameron was banged up pretty bad, but at least she was alive. She suffered from a few bruised ribs, her left shoulder was dislocated but had been popped back into place, and she had frequent headaches that resulted from the concussion. She was already having headaches so this didn’t help her at all. A few other issues were present, but those were the main ones. FMLA was granted from her job and she would be off for the next four to six weeks. The doctor said it would only take about two to three weeks for her to heal, but her boss recommended that she take four to six weeks off. Sonya gathered all of the necessary paperwork and brought it by the hospital for Cameron to sign and that was how she got everything done and sent to human resources.

Mrs. Miller wanted to know every single thing that had been going on once they got settled. Cameron started out by telling her that Charlotte was the one who had been giving Malcolm information on her. She cried and told her about how she had started confiding in her, thinking that she really was becoming close with her big sister like she had always wanted. Cameron was hesitant about telling her mom about her relationship with Keith and also what all led to it, but her mom already knew most of it and wasn’t judgmental. Cameron’s mom had gone and got her a new phone and she tried calling Charlotte several times, but she never answered. Cameron left voice messages cursing her out and even sent text messages but her mom told her to stop and leave it alone. She was torn to know that her daughters would never be close.
